Reference managers

  • Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager for all platforms. It collects references from the browser and exports .bib files. With the Better BibTeX plugin, it keeps a .bib file and stable citation keys in sync automatically.
  • JabRef is a free, open-source reference manager that uses BibTeX as its native format.
  • BibDesk is a free BibTeX manager for macOS.

Editors

  • Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor that runs BibTeX and biber for you and can import references from Zotero and Mendeley.
  • TeXstudio is a free LaTeX editor with BibTeX support built in.
  • LaTeX Workshop is the LaTeX extension for Visual Studio Code, with citation completion from .bib files.

Processors

  • BibTeX is included in every TeX distribution (TeX Live, MiKTeX, MacTeX).
  • biblatex and biber are the modern alternative for bibliographies in LaTeX.
  • Pandoc formats citations from .bib files in Markdown, Word and HTML documents.

Utilities
